THE NEW TAEIFF. Sydney, February 12.

At a meeting of the Chamber of Manufacturers, to discuss the effects of the new tariff, strong complaints were made that it was already having a serious effect on the industries. The bootmakers said that they have already had to reduce wages 15 per cent, and further reductions are contemplated. Japanese boots made by labour paid at the rate of 2s 6d per week had begun to flood the market, and they were seriously considering the removal of their factories to Japan. The representatives of the cement trade said that the only alternative to reducing wages 25 per cent, would be to close the works. It was decided to obtain reports as to the effect of the tariff on different trades. DEOBEASE IN STOCK. As evidence of the severity of the drought, the stock returns for the colony for the year ended the 31st of December, show a decrease of 9,500,000 sheep, 802,000 head of cattle, and 19,500 horses, compared with the previous year. The decrease in sheep is equal to 16.7 of the whole flocks. The Sydney Morning Herald says the decrease represents a shortage of the wool clip of from 150,000 to 200,000 bales. THE GBEENEB GUN CASE. Melboubne, February 12. The Greener gun case has been finally settled by the plaintiff accepting reduced damages to the amount of £525. THBEE GIBLS DBOWNED. A girl, named Gilpin; while bathing at Casterton, got out of her depth. Two sisters, named Humphries, went to her assistance, but they also got into difficulties, and all three were drowned. A WIFE MUBDEBED. Perth, February 12. Another murder is reported in the northern district, where a native murdered his young wife by beating her, and subsequently setting fire to her body.
