WELLINGTON, February 12.

The first of the returns prepared this Benson by the Agricultural Department is now being made up. So far only the figures for Hawke'a Bay, Wellington and Mariborough are ready. Under the new system two returns will be made instead of one. First, the area sown or intended to be eown, and later on the usual estimate of the crop that has always been published. Under the area of grain sown is included that intended for threshing, for feeding down with stock, for ensilage, and for chaffing, bat ia the returns appended only the area intended for threshing is given.

Hawke's Bay—Wheat 695 aoret, oate 6830 acres, barley 1842 acres, maize 1105 acres, potatoes 1536 acres, beet 218 acres. Wellington—Wheat 7401 acres, oats 18,597 acres, barley 761 acres, maize 421 acres, potatoes 4375 acres. Mariborough—Wheat 6181 acres, oalu 3588 acres, barley 761 acres, potatoes 778 acres.

Hawke'a Bay— Horses 13,764, swine 9,550, sheep 2,765,407. cattle 636. Wellington—Horses 39,209. swine 48,980, aheep 3,367,415, cattle 211.496. Marlboroagb—Horses 4.755, swine 4,147, sheep 788,643, cattle 11,679.
