Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright London, January 24. The Bank of England returns published to-day show the total reserve in notes and bullion to be £39,178,000, the proportion of reserve to liabilities being 62.52.
Three months' bills are discounted at 2 per cent. ' Consols, 107f. New South VYalea 4 per cent, inscribed sfock, 116t>4 3£ do, 107£. Victorian 4 per cent., iO9 ; 3£ do, 103. South Australian 4 per cent., 110f; 3f do, 107. Queensland 4 per cent., llOi; S£ do, 105. Tasmanian Si per "cent", 105«. Western Australian 4 per cent." 121. New Zealand 4 per cent., 11l J; 3£ do, 104f. New Zealand long-berried wheat, ex warehouse, nominal; South Australian, 29s 9d; Victorian do, 29s 9d; market quiot. Kow Zealand mutton, second quality, 8&d. ' Hemp is firm; good New Zealand, £15. At the wool sales a choice selection was offered and sold at top prices. Continental buyers took the largest proportion. The Bradford market is quiet. Top makers demand Id advance, but spinners refuse. Butter market flat at 108s; finest quality, 110s. Sugar, best German beet, 11s 9d; Java, 13s 6d, firm. No. 1 best Scotch pig iron, f.o.b. in Clyde, 46s 9d. January 25. At the wool sales there is keen competition, with a tendency to advance. The present series will close on the 80th. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, iomited, have received the following London cablo message, dated 24th January, 18S6:— Tallow—Market better. New Zealand fine mutton and good beef are worth respectively 22s 6d and 20s 9d per cwt. (Last quotations were 22s 3d and 20s 3d per cwt.) Frozen Meat—Market dull. Canterbury mutton is worth Bfd per lb. (Last quotation was 4d.)
