O'Brien intends in all probability settling again at Riccarton. The starting by Mr Philp at the Gore races last week was not up to the mark. Aldershot, a Dunedin Cup candidate, is pleasing his connections in his work. The horses that filled the places in the Gore Cup are all the produce of Lady Emma. The starting of Mr Piper at the Poverty Bay Turf Club's meeting is highly spoken of. Mikado 11. has been taken up again after a season at the stud. He is said to be quite sound. The finish for the Gore Cup was fought out between the full brothers Maremma and Dilemma. The privileges in connection with the Egmont Racing Club's Summer meeting realised £366. In Mr O'Brien's opinion racing has gone back very much in the last twelve months in New South Wales. The South Canterbury Jockey Club have fixed on April 16th and 17th as dates for their Autumn Meeting. A gathering is to be held at Cheviot on the Queen's Birthday. The McKenzie Cup is the title of the chief event. According to latest advices, Mr W. R. Wilson was lying seriously ill at Dr. Fitzgerald's private hospital, Melbourne. The turns on the Town and Suburban Club's course at Taradale have been altered, which is said to be a great improvement. Goodman's stable our Dunedin correspondent finds for tho most part turned into a hospital. Most of the inmates are on the sick list. W. H. Keith returned to New Zealand last week. It is incorrect that he has accepted a trainer's appointment in New South Wales. Capital nominations have been received for the Tapanui R.C.s annual meeting on the two last days of the month. McCalmont, presided. The song was received with enthusiastic approval. The programme for the annual gathering, at Little River, of the Akaroa County Racing Club appears in thi3 week's Calendar. There is very Blight alteration in the programme to that submitted last season. The Hurdle Race has been confined to district horses and the stake reduced to £20, there being also a small reduction in the prize for the Cup. This week's Calendar contains the programme for the Manawatu Racing Club's Autumn Meeting, which takes place on February 26th and 27th. Except that the prize for the Consolation Handicap has been increased, the bill of fare is the same as last season. There is over £800 down for distribution on the two days, and there is bound to be heavy nominations on the 7th ult., entry day. The inaugural gathering of the Marumaru (Hawke's Bay) Hack Racing Club took place on the Bth inst., when there was a good attendance. The chief race brought out half a dozen runners, Haromi winning from Kahu and Longwaist. The other winners wore :—Hurdles, Oringi; District Hack Race, Warngal; Flying and Forced Handicaps, Mati. In the Flying handicap Mati was followed home by Haromi and the same horse and Spray finished a dead heat for second place in Mati's second race.
