The impression prevails that it- will make a tour of the world. APPOINTMENT. Major Sir Claude Maxwell Macdonald, Commissioner and ConsulGeneral of the Niger Coast Protectorate, has been appointed British j Minister in Pekin. ! THE EXPLORATION OF CENTRAL AUSTRALIA. Captain Horn, who fitted out the Horn scientific expedition, which explored Central Australia in the middle of. 189-i, read a paper at the Colonial Institute dealing with his travels. He stated that the reports of the scientists who accompanied the expedition would be published in February. "DISSOLUTE UNEMPLOYED." Sir H. Norman, late Governor of Queensland, in an interview, stated the principal towns in that colony were suffering from the dissolute unemployed and there is a splendid field there for energetic immigrants. MEKONG DISPUTE SETTLED. The Mekong dispute has been settled. PRINCE HENRY OF BATTENBERG. Prince Henry of Battenberg, who is suffering from fever in Ashantee, is worse, and he remains at Prahsu. CARDINAL MANNING. Cardinal Manning's biography, which is published, shows that he was invited to stand for the last Papacy. SOUTH AFRICAN GOLD MINES. Barney Barnato, the South African millionaire, addressing a meeting of shareholders interested in South African ventures, stated that the value of property in South Africa had depre- | ciated to a very large extent during the last six months. He mentioned . that the gold mines he represents yielded gold to the value of £1,750,000 in 1395, and paid nearly one million in dividends. ACCIDENT TO THE RAKAIA. The new steamer Rakaia grounded on a sand bank off Cape Verde on the 6fch instant, but was floated off without sustaining much damage, and proceeded on her voyage to New Zealand. SUICIDE OF A BANKER. Pabis, January 14. M. Jacques Meyers, a well known city banker, has committed suicide. THE CANADIAN CABINET. Ottawa, January 14. Sir Chas. Tupper and five of the retiring Ministers join the new' Cabinet. . Sir Charles Tupper will take the Premiership at the end of the session. THE AMERICAN LOAN. Washington, January 14. The American loan will be subscribed' by the public without the aid of syndicates.
