FIRES.
•*> Mr A. A. Downs, of Cheviot, suffered the loss of his property in addition to a good amount of money in notes, by a fire which took place at his section on Saturday last. Everything being so dry the fire could not be put out. Mr Downs has been very unfortunate, this being the second fire during his residence at Cheviot. On both occasions he lost all his goods and money. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) NAPIER. January 14. A fire broke out in O'Sullivan's boardinghouse at Hastings early this morning, Inglis's store, Blake's store, and an unoccupied restaurant also being destroyed. The inmates of the boarding-house saved nothing. Mr O'Sullivan and his wife and two children escaped with great difficulty. The cause is unknown. The insurances are as follows:—O'Sullivan's house £240 in the North British, furniture £100 in the Standard ; Inglis, £75 in the South British ; Scott's restaurant, £50 in the Manchester; Blake, £60 in the Alliance office.
