LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,— IBEGV to announce that I feel it my duty to RETIRE from my Candidature for the Representation of the City. As you are aware, when first asked to become a Candidate, I ■ resolutely declined owing to the claims of my business upon my time and attention. On being subsequently pressed to stand I had hopes that the business difficulties could be surmounted. Since becomiug a Candidate, however, events have transpired which will compel the absence of my brother, who is my Partner, from the colony for a considerable portion of this year. As during this time I should be required, if elected, to attend to my Parliamentary duties, I am unable to see my way to continue my Candidature, as in my opinion a man's first duty is to his family. I may say that, had! been aware of the difficulties to which I have referred, 1 should not have consented to become a Candidate. I regret being compelled to retire, as the promises of support given mc afforded mc every hope of success in the contest. I also thank all those who have proffered their support. In conclusion, I beg to express the hope that whoever may be selected by the Liberals of Christchurch as a candidate will receive a united support, and that the progressive legislation of the past five years will be continued. Yours faithfully, JOHN L. SCOTT. 1683 MEETINGS, &C. BUILDING TRADES' PICNIC.
