SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION.

Yesterday morning at Lyttelton ib was discovered that some bales of wool recently loaded into the barque Pitcairn Island we_3 on fire. They were at once got out of the hold and on to the deck, when it was found that they were two bales of a line branded "102,". The fire appeared to have started in tbe centre of one of the bales and worked its way outward, bnt had not broken out into a blaze. It is probable that the whole of the line will be taken out of the vessel for examination. Tbe barque is almost ready for sea, and it is easy to imagine the casualty that might have ensued had she got well upon her voyage before the fire broke out.
