THE KENNEL.
WELLINGTON ITEMS. *-. Weekly Press and Referee." [By Ktmi.] Last week I had the pleasure of a visit from Mr Clarkson, Of Lohdoh, a noted Airedale fahcier. Ml* Clarkson paid a visit to Mr Rogei-'s kennels, and was highly impressed with the quality of the dogs there. He is at present touring in the Hot Lakes District, and intends doing the Milford Sounds and Cold Lake's trip. Mr Thoo. Ritchie Wfts tho only oWhei* of Aitadales until lately, but he has sold both his bitches, one to Mr E. J. Hill and ono to Mr H. Dibley. I understand a brace of this u.eful breed will soon put in an appearance here from Melbourne.
Mr Didsbury has just Completed the building ot new kennels, which are models of tho kind. The sanitary arrangement are perfect, and every care has been exercised by the owner to ensure the comfort of his canine pets. Mr Triggs, reports that Ids fox terrier bitch Diversion has whelped three pups to his imported dog, Dusky D'Orfiay. These pups are entered for the Produce Stakes this year. The well-known fox terrier bitch Ercildoune Daphne (of Melbourno), is under offer to a Wellington fancier.' I From Napier I hear that Mt Sti-Venl. has erected a fine set o. new kennels, in view of the arrival of a brace of fox terriers from England. No advice has yet beett received as to their being shipped, but I hope this spirited fancier will riot do again disappointed by tlon-arrival. Mr Stevens intends to have the best dogs in the colony, and is sparing no expense to procure the best blood. He intends, if necessary, to take a trip to England irt order to get what he wants. Hehas my best wishes towards success, Mr A. E. Stanton, (Napier), has sent his collie bitch Starlight to Rogen's First Shot, and Sunlight has visited tho owner's Greater Britain. Dr. Bet-nan of the same town, has bought a fox terrier puppy Rimu Carbine ex Regalia, from Mr R. Triggs of Wbllihgton. Mr J. Higf'ins is tho only Napiei* fanoier in possession of an Irish terrier, he having just purchased a promising pup by (km Cregan. Mr Hindman. bitch. Veto, by Vano ex Viri Charming, has whelped six pups to Earl's Renown (Melbourne). It ia possible that this bitch may find hel* Way to Harewood Kennels before long, as negotiations are under way for her purchase. These pups are also entered for the N.__. Produce Stakes.. Whilst on the subject of kennel matters in Napier it may not be amiss to Buggest the advisablenes. of forming a Kennel Club there. Good dogs are now being freely introduced, and with a good secretary, Napier would soon have a club that would hold its own with any other in New Zealand. Every year a fine contingent of dogs come tp Wellington Show, and I am sure if an exhibition of dogs was held in Napier, every effort Would be mado both by Wellington and Palmerston fanciers to make it a success. The public of Napier are well-known for their liberality in the matter of special prizes, and with assistance from outside ooßapetitors, the quality of dogs that would undoubtedly be benched would give a phlip to the already great interest taken in canine.matters. I will be glad to hear and chronicle the fact that steps will coon be taken to form a club. Wanted, a Now Zealand Kennel Club. Where is the head-quarters of this moribund institution? Some two months ago, the delegates from the various clubs met at Christchurch, and owing to various and unforeseen causes the meet-tig was adjourned to enable the clubs of New Zealand to decide as to the most suitable place for locating tho N.Z.K.C, It waa arranged that each club should send a voting paper to the chairman of the Dunedin Society* intimating which city they considered most suitable as the headquarters for the N.Z.K.C. this, I believe, has been done, but up to tho tilde of writing no reply has been received from Dunedin. I presume now that the New Year's festivities are. over, the Dunedin people will wake up and deign to let fancierknow the result of the ballot. ' Mr A. B. Clater-s collie bitch Una has whelped seven pups to Lord Glasgow's
j Bonne, by Laird of Bhernbournc. Mr CUta I has sent a commission to Me.bottt-n. t<& i i first-class _.. Bernard. The dog ahould f arrive in about three weeks time.
Messrs Triggs and Bligli have nominal British Venus tor the Produce Stakes. :- Private ietters from England stato that the bWher of the fox terrier Doverivux hat refused £150 for the. dog. This offer wa». hiade by the former owner, who eoldhimfo. £100. Deveraux is full brother lo Diversion now in the Harewood Kennels, Wellington!' Mr S. Clarke of Sydney ha_ sent his collibitch Dot,'by Ormskirk Paradox ('mp.)« Glitheroe Lassie (imp.), to Mr F. Rogaj*. First Shot. Australian bl-eeders are w_kl_g up to the fact that New Zealand has dom worthy of attention.
Fanciers in various parts of New Zenfolwl' are asking for some dofinite information regarding the date of the next Wellington Show. It was decided some month, ago that the date should bo altered, but the committee have given no official notice of the proposed alteration, and fanciors at. in the dark. This should not be. It ia im. Eortant and necessary that fanciers .hBUM now the date as" early as possible," ih order that they make arrangemonti fa-t-he exhibits, and if the committee will take a hint kindly I give them one free, vi_, fix the date of 1896 show and make it kno-flfii., With the-iefeW notes I Wish all my confrem, fanciers, dogs, cats, and leaders of ,tho' Referee a Prosperous New Year.
