THE HAILSTORM AT OAMARU.
MUCH DAMAGE DONE. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TKLEOR4M.) OAMARU, January 6. Yesterday's storm turns put to have been purely local, consequently the crops in the district have escaped. The damage was confined mainly to the town. Almosc every pane of glass in the skylights was smashed co atoms, trees thrashed to tatters, and fruit, vegetables and flowers, are all ruined. Messrs Bulleid and Co., drapers, estimate their loss at £1000, their extensive skylights being all broken and the stock damaged greatly by water. Many others suffer heavy loss. Many hailstones fell from sin to Bin in circumference, in some cases piercing the corrugated iron roofs. The sea was churned to foam by the falling stones, and the splash of individual stones in the sea conld be discerned by lookers-on half a mile away. Cattle and stock which wero exposed were driven frantic and are bruised aud swollen. Some slight stock fatalities are reported. The trees, both orchard and ornamental, look as if they had been subjected to blight or caterpillars. Ihe fall was unexampled in the memory of any of the residents.
