FIRE ON A STEAMER.

(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND. January 4. An outbreak of fire occurred shortly after midnight on the steamer Kanieri, which was lying alongside tbe Onehunga wharf. When discovered the flames were burning through the deck. After some little trouble tbe fire was suppressed by the Fire Brigade, assisted by the crew, the damage being confined to the coal bunkers between which and tho boilers tbe outbreak is supposed to have originated. The steamer was engaged in discharging coal up to a late hour last night, and was to have left for Opunake and Wauganui this afternoon.
