ANTHRACITE COAL.
TO THE EDITOR OF TILE PRESS. Sir, —I noMce in your paper last week that a large gum of in cm 03' had been spent in boring for anthracite coal in Australia. This class of coal is a scarce article throughout Australasia, and has, I believe, ouly been found in Canterbury. These coal seams are within fifty miies of Cbristchurch, but, straugo to say, such is the apathy of the people in this part of Naw Zealand that hitherto sufficient/ capital has not been forthcoming to work such a valuable mineral, which is superior to any other kind of CDal for smelting and steam purposes, and every particle of which is used. Christchurch professes to encourage local industries, and yet imports more thau any other city iv New Zealand, although there are hundred* of acres of coal which could be profitably worked, and sold at a cheaper rate than that now in general use. Numbers of men coul i be iv constant work, and the public materially benefited, if the community at large would only take proper steps aud really encourage local industry.— Yours, &c, Cheap Fires.
