AUCKLAND, Januarys Albert Edward Alley, who was in custody on a charge of breaking and entering and two charges of theft, escaped from Mount Eden gaol yesterday by scaling a wall. The same prisoner escaped about a fortnight ago from the police station by making a hazardous climb irotn the exercise yam over the roofs of several bouses, but subsequently surrendered himself. He is the first prisoner to escape from Mount Eden gaol. GIBBORNE, January 2. The Borough Council granted a slaughtering license to the new Freezing Works, which will commence operations ou Monday next. Tt.o Harbour Board shed has been converted into a chamber capable of freezing 500 sheep a day and storing 15,000 carcases of mutton. WELLINGTON', January 2. Mr 21. U. R., leaves on Saturday ou a trip to Australia. Hβ will deliver political addresses in the various centres. fcAPIER, January 2. There has been a good spell of fine weather, greatly favouring shearing operations, and the crops throughout the district give promise of much better yields than for some years past. During 1895 the Customs duties collected at Napier totalled £65.630 18s 3d. showing a fulling off of £4000 compared with the previous year. PICTON, January 2. The Regatta yesterday was attended by several thousand people, but the competition in the rowiug events was very poor, the Welliugton Rowing Club's crews outclassing their opponents in every event. They won the Senior, Junior aud Maiden Fours with the greatest ease, while Poll and Sargeant won the Pair-oar Ciinker Race by several lengths.
DUNEDIN, January 2. One of the engines of the Northern express was derailed ao Purakanui clitfa, causing Ibree hours' detention, but none of the carriages left the rails.
