ATHLETIC NOTES.
By Vavlteb. At the North Shore A.C.'s Sleeting on Saturday, A. Brady (scr) was beaten by Wilson (250 yds) by 3yds in 14min 21sec in the Two Miles Walking Handicap. Brady was timed to do 14min 213-sth sec, which is the New Zealand record. The Nelson College Sports were held on December 14th, when the weather was extremely favourable and there was a large attendance. The Senior Cup was won by P. Mules for the second year in succession. He won the 100 yds race from scratch in 10 2-sth sec, and was second in the Long Jump (19ft 3iin) and in the High Jump (sft). The Junior Cup was won by R. Palmer, who scored no less than six firsts. He must be a promising all round atJilete, as he won the Long and High Jumps, the lOOyde, 440 yds and 880 yds flat races, and the 100 yds Hurdles. The 100 yds Old Boys' Race was annexed by C Broad (scr), H. Stuckey (3yds) being second and C. Major (scr) third. Time 10 3-sth sec. Wefers, the sprinter who so effectually defeated Bradley in the International games recently, will not become a Yale " undergrad," says the New York Recorder. This is to be regretted, not because he would have
proved an acquisition to the Light Blue's athletic ranks, but because the younz men at Eli have a famoo.3 antidots for I " swelled heads." When Wefers first arrived at Travers Island he exhibited symptoms of the swelled head malady. When he defeated Cntm in a trial it became more : virulent, but when he secured the Championship, and later upset Bradley*s applecart, the disorder had become alarming, so nrach so that a feliow ulubm.iu observed : "His head's got so bisj that his legsll give way under the weight." Now had young Wciera goue to Yale, he would have :i good deal of tliit? knocked out o! him ; as it is, the disease may linger on him till the end of his days. Pipor Donovan's proposal to meet Wcfers in v 100 yds go would indicate that the feverish anxiety of pugilists to have their names continually in typ?;, and consequently before the public" is extending to the cinder path. When Pip'-v suggested a meeting no one knew better than he that it would not be sanctioned by the Amateur Athletic Union. Piper, under the v/oiiderful mechanism of Mickey Finn's watch, covered the 100 yds in 9 3-sth soc. Mickey might preserve the watch, for the alleged feat can never be regarded seriously by any except Piper, Finn and one or two cronies. W. Mendelson, the New Zealander, was one of the judges at the Cambridge University Freshmen's Sports, held at Cambridge on' November 6th and 7th. B. .T. Dudley, New Zealand and Selwyn College, ran second in his heat in the 100 yds, C. F. Havdie beating him by seven yards in 11 2-sth soc. E. H. Flack, the ex-champion of Australia, won the Thames Hare and Hounds Membsra' four miles and three-quarters Challenge Cup in November very easily from A. L. Rye, the holder. The time was 30min 37sec, but it would have been considerably better had not Flack gone a long distance out of his way through not knowing the course. T. B. Bax, the Blenheim athlete, has written to the Sydney Referee, saying he will make an attempt to beat Griffiths' club swinging record of 27 hrs. at Foley's Hall, Sj'dne\*, next month. It has been decided to form a club in Wellington to be called " The Wellington Athletic Sports Club." A provisional committee ha 3 been appointed to draw up a prospectus, and take other necessary steps to form the club, obtain premises, &c, and report at another general meeting to be held a month hence. Mr Henderson was appointed to act as Secretary pro tern.
