THE NEW ZEALAND CHESS CONGRESS.
In recognition of the services of its chess editor, the management of Al offer the following special prizes to be competed for i at the tournament: —1. A prize of 2gs for the s most brilliant game played at the tourna- • ment. 2. A prize of 2gs for the best score s made by a non-prize-winner against the prize- > winners. 3. A prize of lg for the shortest game-in the tournament in which mate is ■ actually effected. The competitors spoken of as likely, to be ; present are: Mr Hookham and either Mr ; Harry Andersen or Mr Eustace King (Mr ; Andersen has been chosen) from Christ- , church ;Mr Edwards, from Dunedin; Messrs Thomas Sexton, James Sexton, Pearoe, i Freeman, Meldrum, Pleasants, and Hatherly, rom the-Woodville, Pahiatu, and Wangal nui Clubs. It is to be regretted thatr Mr It. : A. Cleland's business engagements are likely ! to prevent him from entering, and so far i there is only Mr Edwards likely to be in I" a position to represent the 'Otago Chess i Club. It is not unlikely that Oamaru will ! send one or more representatives, so that i altogether there may be quite a score of competitors.— Evening Star.
