The racing was of the ' most interesting description and many ex- \ citing finishes were fought out. The lengthy j programme was got through close up to , time, and no hitch occurred. The officials , worked energetically, and the Hon. Sec., I Mr W. J> S. Hayward, was as successful in his duties as he has hitherto been. The I Garrison Band played an excellent proj gramme. The new asphalt tract was in very good order, but as it had been recently top-dressed, it was not so fast as it will be later on. The presence of W. L. Kerr, the popular Sydney rider, gave additional interest to the events in which he was a competitor, and there were a number of new riders from both i North and South taking part, whose form ' there was a keen desire to see. One of J the moat promising young riders was J. W. Jones, of the Pioneer Bicycle Club, who scored an easy win in the Mile Maiden Roadster, and carried off the Half Mile Bicycle Handicap with an allowance of 40yds, the Two Mile Roadster Handicap from scratch, and was second in the Throe Mile Roadster Handicap, also from the back j mark. 12. Casbolt, of the same club, also rode well in the roadster events, being second in the Maiden, and winning the One Mile and Two Miles, and second in the Three Mile Handicaps. Some good riding ! was seen in the heats of the Half Mile Handicap, C. H. Jones winning the first in r time equal to the present New Zealand ' reoord, and had he not eased up he should ' have been able to knock off at least a second. J A good deal of interest was taken out of the final heat through Jones and Simpson ' waiting for each other and putting themselves out of the running. The One Mile 1 Provincial Championship was a pretty race, 1 and a good set to between Kerr and Jones 8 ended in favour of the latter by two machine 1 lengths, Harry Thompson, who rode well throughout the day, being third. In the ' One Mile Ladies' Bracelet Kerr, scr, got ' home in front of Harry Thompson, 1 30yds, in 2min 20 2-sth sco, which takes • the place of H. J. Pither'a record of 2mtn 24sec for the distance. In the Five 3 Mile Open Handicap Eerr turned the tables 5 on C. H. Jones, winning a well contested ' raoe by two lengths, with J. O. Shorland a good third. The Visitors' One-and-a-half Mile Bicycle Handicap was won by J. Buchanan, of the West Taieri Cyoling Club, from the 40yds mark. The two flat races produced large fields and good contests, F. W. Johnston, 19yds, the limit man, winning the 220 yds (handicap and D. Wood, 20yds, i carried off the 440 yds in good style. A race - among the bandsmen caused a good deal of > ainueement. > _..
