Correepondenoe was read [ and dealt with as follows:—From Messrs . Harman and Stevens, asking for refund of I rates on unoccupied building in Norwich * quay. Referred to the Finance Committee, j with power to act. From A. B. MoCready, , asking permission to hold sports in London , street on New Year's Day. The Council [ had no objection. A number of persona , wrote re the Hawkers and Pedlars By-law. I The petition was ordered to lie on the . table for a fortnight, no steps to be taken [ against the petitioners in the meantime. It . was decided to add Crs. Laurenson, Grubb , and Owen to the Sub-committee to consider , the hawkers' and pedlars' by-law and the ■ solicitor's letter thereon. An extension of . time was also granted to the Committee to . report. The report of the Special Com* J mittee re municipal fire insurance was re- , ceived. It was to the effect that at present , the borough paid over £2000 per annum r to cover the fire risks. In return for , this the Fire Insurance Association paid , £30 per annum towards keeping the Fire , Brigade in ah efficient) state. l)uring She ■ past; ten years the average annual losa . caused by fires in the borough had been under £250. The Committee regretted to I find there was no way in which the borough , could, under the present Acts by which j local bodies are governed, go in for a system j of municipal fire insurance. They there* , fore recommended that the member for the j district be asked to support any amend* , ment in the present Local Bodies Act which , would give this power, and that in the mean* , time the Council co-operate as far as it can with the Invercargill Fire Insurance League. ' The report was adopted. Mr J. P. Jones [j was appointed valuer for the Borough. Cγ. Grubb mentioned the bad smell coming from [ several of the rubbish trucks on the wharf, . and it was decided to write to the Harbour r Board on the matter. The question of , altering the Borough boundaries was re- , ferred to a Special Committee consisting of , the Mayor and Crs. Webb, Cook, Brice, I and Laurenaon, to draw up a report. Cγ. Grubb was elected to fill the place on the various committees vacated by the Mayor, j The Finance Committee reported the re* I ceipts to be £137 4s 23, and advised payI ments amounting to £109 6a 9d.
