ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS.
While the rest of tho community were enjoyiug their Christmas fare, the athletes in training, under the eyes of their managers, had to deny themselves. They even received orders to jgo down to Lancaster Park, and there the members of the Auckland team and the Wellington representatives, who had only just arrived by the Takapuna, were to be seen yesterday morning and afternoon doing their work on the tracks. The Danedin team, Messrs W. A. Low (manager), P. Macassey, J. J. Kingston, W. |F. Bennett, and J. Maxwell, arrived by ■ the express, and were driven to thetr quarters at the RoyaL , They had among their baggage a suspicious-looking demijohn, which, on enquiry, turned out to be oaly water. Their manager has no doubt found out by experience the effect that a change of water has on a visiting team, and has taken this wise precaution. Kingsley and Bailey, the Wanganui representatives, came down iv the Takapuna and were taken to the Empire, where the Wellington team are staying. Hempton, McC-rdell and Gore should arrive on Saturday morning from Wellington; Given fine weathei on Saturday we should see one of the finest athletic gatherings ever held in New Zealand. The Melbourne team arrived at Dunedin by the Hauroto yesterday morning and were met by some members of the Danedin Athletic Club. Messrs R. Hunter, the Nelson pole jumper, and H. Cole, the Gisborne hurdle representative, arrived from the North on Tuesday morning. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON. December 25.
