THE STEAMER FIFESHIRE.
The steamer Fifeshire was examiaed ya»« terday by Captain Willis, Surveyor lot Lloyd's and the Canterbury Underwriters Association, Mr H. Barnes, and Mr Croll, .the Government Inspector of Machinery. It was found that she had sustained very severe damage some 30 feet from her.stern, close to' the keel, on the starboard side. This is where she first touched the rocks, and a number of her plates and also several of her timbers are crushed in very badly, although, thanks to the flatness ot the rooks upon which she jgrounded, the pUtes are not out through. She leaked very badly, however, and the forepaak became full of water. She appears- to have Settled on the rook again amidsbip. right under the bridge on the starboard side as here quite a number of her plates are badly dented, cracked, and started,- allow-, ing.the water to run into the steamer very freely. She will be floated out of Friday, to allow of her' discharging her fre_en mutton, of which she has 22,000 carcases oi_ board. This will probably; ■*« transferred to the b.s. Perthshire, how on the voyage to Wellington and _ytWlto_t which will come to Lyttelton direct, and will probably arrive on Wednesday. After putting out the mutton the Fifeshire will return to the dock, where the necessary re« pairs will be effected. It is thought that these will take a month or six weeks to carry out.
