THE RECEPTION OF THE CRICKETERS.
It will be seen from a report in another column that the New South Wales cricketers will be officially received, by the Mayor of Christehurch after all, although not in the City Council Chamber. The ceremony will lose nothing in its surroundings from being held in the fine hall of the Provincial Council Buildings, of which Christehurch is justly proud, nor, we are sure, in its heartiness now that the unfortunate misunderstanding which arose in the first place has been cleared away. We are still at a loss to understand how? it could have entered into the mind of any man that the City Council Chamber was an inappropriate place in which to show civic hospitality to visitors from a neighbouring colony. Such an idea does not seem to have occurred to the municipal authorities in Wellington, where our New South Wales visitors were officially welcomed by the Mayor of that city and the ~Hon. W. P. Reev_3 in the City Council Chamber yesterday afternoon. However, it gives us great pleasure to see that Mr. Cooper, '" when he is shown to have made a mistake, has the courage to admit the fact and the -good sense .to try to put it right. He hatf done the best thing to regain the good feeling of the citizens, and is to be congratulated on having accepted criticism in such an excellent spirit. We hope that the reception will pass off very pleasantly, and that our visitors will carry away an agreeable recollection of their Christehurch experiences.
