(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAMS.) WELLINGTON, December 5. In the Supreme Court a Native named Karataina was convicted of passing valueless cheques at Palmeraton North and sentenced lo six months' imprisonment. The charge of procuring abortion preferred against Mm Brown occupied the Court all day, the jury being again locked up for the night. DUNEDIN, December 5. In the conspiracy case, which was concluded last night, Eastwood was aentenoed to two years' imprisonment, and Hudson and Miller to eighGeen months each. Samuel Lister, proprietor of the Otago Workman, was convicted of a criminal libel on Mr Adams, solicitor, and sentenced to three months' imprisonment without hard labour. Thi3 concludes the criminal aittings. Judge Williams, in passing sentence on Lister, said that in this case there was no excuse that defendant was discussing a public institution. It wae a wanton not towards a private individual, for which there was no excuse. To talk of the liberty of the press in such a connection was a gross absurdity, and anything short of imprisonment was wholly unwarrantable.
