THURSDAY'S PRODUCE REPORT.
(BT OUR COMMERCIAL EDITOR.) At this season of the year, business in grain and produce is generally very quiet, and the existence of very email stocks at the present time tends more than ever to emphasise the quietness ruling in the trade. Opinions seem to be divided as to the probabilities of a depreciation or otherwise in the value of wheat, some holding the opinion that our stocks available are even now more than sufficient for our own probable needs, whilst others are confident that January and February will see a decided shortage of supplies, and a consequent hardening in values. Whichever surmise is correct, the fact remains that the limited business passing is being done on most cautious lines, and speculators are quite averse to operating on the present level of values here. Oats have been receiving more attention of late from buyers, and as stooke are ondoubtedly light, and the prospects for the next two or three months fairly good, there is a probability of prices being well maintained for this cereal. The market remains steady at from 2s to 2s Id for good short feed, and Is 10d to Is lid for long varieties.
Baruct has rery little present enquiry, and quality is too poor to tempt speculative purchasing. Prices range from 2s 6d to 2s 9:1 for fair to medium malting qualities. Chajf keeps steady, and sales are almost daily being effected at from 60s to 62s 6d. Potatoes receive no attention now from buyers, and to all appearances the season has closed, demand from the outside markets having fallen off altogether. There does nob appear to be anything doing in other lines, and prices stand nominal at our recent valuations. [Thus quotations, unless othsrinse specified, are the net cash prices paid to the producer free of brokerage or commission, and for delivery at country stations within a twenty-five mile radius of town. For delivery on board ship at LytteUon add 2d to 2' 2 d per bushel']
