ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.
A meeting of the Council of this Society was held at 4 p.m. yesterday. Present— Mr Carrick (in the chair), Dr. Dandy, and Messrs Ritchie, Hamer, Clark, Izard, Harman.
Correspoudence was read—From Mr J. Studbolme, stating that he had never forbidden any angler fishing in the Rangitata, but told them to close the gates, and that the Ashburton Society had no reasoa to write such a letter as they had done to tbe Canterbury Society. From Mr Shury, Secretary of the Ashburton Sooiety, with reference to the fishiug in the Rangitata river. From Mr Spackman, stating that two men, holding lic.nses, had been Qshing night and day ou the Selwyn since the season opened, and had taken some 200 trout out and had salted them and put them in barrels, which was unsportsmanlike. From the two gentlemen referred to, stating that they had only caught some twenty-nine fish, and had put some salt oh them to keep them fresh. They had had only thirteen days' _shin_, and had only caught some twenty-three fish, four of which were sent to his house, and the remainder to friends in Christchurch. It was considered that the explanation was satisfactory. From Constable W. W. Smart, of Kaikoura, stating that he thought there were a good many trout in the district, and steps were being taken to prove it. From Mr Nottage, expressing his opinion that the turning out of stoats and weasels in Canterbury would prove to be a great evil. From th 9 South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, asking whether the Society intended introducing red-legged partridges. From Mr F. H. Hoare, Rainchfie, asking where snipe could be obtained. It was resolved to reply tbat snipe could be obtained from Ceylon and from Australia. From the Colonial Secretory, forwarding the amended Animals Protection Act, coming into force on Ist January.
Dr. Dsndy brought under the notice of the Council a report of the proceedings of the New South Wales Linnean Society, in which it was stated that it was thought chat the humble bees from New Zealand would have a fair chance of doing well.
