THE NEW JUDGE.
According to a Press Association telegram from Wellington, Sir Patrick Buckley has definitely accepted the vacant Judgeship. We are sorry, for the sake of his own reputation, that he had not sufficient strength of mind to refuse an offer that, in the interests of the colony, ought never to have been made to him. Neither the legal antecedents nor the intellectual qualifications of the new Judge mark him out as fitted for the high position he is called upon to fill. And it is additionally unfortunate that, his state of health is such that, even if he were the best man intellectually that could be found for the post, he is physically incapable, at any rate for the present, of doing the heavy work which ought to fall to his share. The Government have deliberately put on one side the interests of the colony and haVe made the appointment for purely political and party reasons. To complete the impropriety of the transaction it is only necessary that they should give the new Judge a long leave of absence and pay somebody else to do his work.
