After leaving the Cape, the met with very heavy weather. On July 20th everythiug movable was washed off the deck, the lifeboat was smashed, and the iazarette, saloon and cabins were tlooied. After that the ship experienced continuous westerly gales and was frequently hove-to. Westward of Tasmania ahe lose her top sail, tho rail was smashed, and the loose fittings wete washed overboard.

September 29.

The ship Nelson, wliich arrived in ballaat irom Algoa. Bay, experienced fearful weather almost throughout. Off Capo Leu win the seas did considerable damage to her deck fittings and woodwork. Several sails were blown to ribbons, and the vessel was throws on her beam-ends. Even when under bare polee the Ice railings were under water, and the officers aad crew -had to crawl along the deck holding on to such ropes or gear as were bandy. For cooio time the vessel was in qre.it peril of

foundering. After about six hours, the gale moderated, and steps were then taken to repair the damage. Captaiu Perrim describes the weathor on that occasion as the worst ever experienced by him at sea.
