THE FUTURE RELIGION OF JAPAN.
A person in very high position in the Japanese Empire not long ago said to a missionary these words, which truthfully rrepresenc the opinion of hii oonntrymen :—
We recognise tu^tChristianity isan improvement on Shiutoism, iv which everything ia God, aud on Buddhism, which is only ona form of atheism, but we wish to mould Cm istianity according to our ideas so as to be able to assimilate it. In this we shall imitate the people of Europe, each one of which has adopted it to its temperament.
Do we not see the English practise I-piscop-liauism, the Gcrmaus Lutherauism. the Uussiuns the Greek schism, the French. the Italians, the So'vui-rds Catholicism *; Since none of you, Protestants, Catholics, Greeks, who bring us the Gospel, cvi agree among yourselves, leava us your formularie;> and go b.*ck to your own country. We wiil examine your creeds aud take from them what will suit.
