SPORTING.
Universal concern was felt on the Riccarton course yesterday when, daring the progress oi the Beaufort Steeplechase, the usually sate Norton waa seen to faU at Cutts , fence, his owner being in the saddle. Alarm was heightened when it was seeu that Mr Gollau did not riso. Fortunately, however, matters were not so serious as at first appeared, for Mr Gollan, who fell on his head, though stunned, soon rallied. On inauiry last night, it was learned that he was progressing favourably aud m?y be able to get about An important sale of thoroughbred stock takes place to-day. Among the lots to be offered are the Grand National winner Mutiny, Couranto, and other well-known horaes. James Cotton, who m«"t with an accident throuah Victim jamming his leg against the rails and later on a second one through the falling of Wharfdale, is progressing favourably at the Hospital, and expects to return to Dunedin by express train to-morrow.
