As we have stated ia a previous issue, while some of the "faddy" members of the New Zealand Parliament are making ; endeavours to dolegallse the totalisator* strong efforts are being made in Victoria and New South Wales to legally introduce the machine in those colonies, where tho leading papers accord the proposal every support. Over one thousand signatures In favour of the totalisator were obtained In one afternoon at Flemington a fortnight ago. We have over and over again discussed the totalisator in all Us bearings, and we can only repeat that it would be a great mistake to deprive the clubs and the people .of its benefits. The Australasian, In referring to the Bill before the Victorian Assembly, says:—" The more the question Is discussed the stronger becomes the case for legalising tbe totalisator. Rich stakes, absolutely fair odds to those who bet, and liberal donations to the charities will all follow the passing of Mr Murray's Bill, and these boons will, we contend, be obtained without doing harm to the breeding industry or in any way lowering the tene of racing. Whether the totalisator Bill will pass this year or not remains to be seen. But it is every day gaining ground as far as public opinion is concerned, and sooner or later Parliament will, at all events, give it the three years' trial ad rotated by Mr Croker. The most important converts recently mado from the other side are the Rev. Dr. Marshall and Mr M'Culloch, who announced themselves last week."
