Drainage of Tai Tapu. —Ab eight o'clock this evening a public meeting of those interested in the improvement and drainage of Tai Tapu will be held in tho local schoolroom. A3 thtf matter ia of considerable importance to reeidenta in the locality, there will no doubt, be a large attendance.
The Customs Tariff.—The offidUs at the Custom House yesterday were iv a perfect quandary as regards the dutieß to be charged. The tariff is so involved that the officials here are at their wits' end.
Supreme Court —His Honour Mr Justice Deaniston' did hot arrive in the Northern steamer yesterday. He will arrive from Wellington to-day. Whitebait.—On the sudden return of fine weather yesterday a few whitebait were seen in the Kaiapoi river. Abrest.—A woman was arrc3ted last night by Constable O'Connell, for breaking a plate glass window in a shop in High street,. the property of Messrs Morrow, Bassetfc and Co.
Popular Concert.—As will be seen elsewhere, a popular concert will be given in the Oddfellows' Hall ihis evening by St. Andrew's choir, assisted by tho Rev. A. Mitchell, Mr E. Lovell, and Mr Albert Corrick's string band. An excellent programme has been arranged, which at the low price of admission should attract a krge audience.
' Masonic. — The Canterbury Masonic Lodge will hold its regular monthly meeting this evening at the Masonic Hall, jlan«hester street, when Bro. Pi Cunningham, D.G M., ami the District Grand Lodge officers, will pay the Lodge a formal visit. The Tariff Proi-osals.—A meeting of the General Committee of the Bootmakers , Union was held in Inglie , Buildings on Wednesday night; the President in the chair. It was decided to send the following telegram to the Premier :—" Re tariff proposalsGeneral Committee Christchurch Bootmakers' Union deplore evidence majority employers and employees iv New Zealand has btea ignored by Government.—s. E. Crookb, * Secretary Ohristchurch Bootmaker*' Society." Diocbsan Clerk and Accountant. —Mi T. M. Geo has been appointed Diocesan Clerk and Accountant in eucceesion to Mr George Baker. At a meetiqg of the Standing Committee the following resolution was carried :—" That the Standing Committee has learned with much regret tbac failing health has compelled Mr Baker to resigu the office of Diocesan Ciork and Accountant, which has been held by him for the period of twenty-eiiiht years/and desires to place on record ita high appreciation of the probity, earnestness and" courteey with whfch he ho 3 ever discharged the duties of his office."

U.A.O l>. I'RAFALGAR LoDGE.-=A moeting of tins Lodge was held iv the Orange Hull, Kuapoi, on Thursday, Bro, A. l'earce, P. UP., in the chair. The D.U.L. officers were received in Druidic form. The Secretary read the half-yearly balance sheet which showed the heaviest sickness aud death rate ever recorded iv Uio history of the Lodge; it was received wul adopted. Harmony was now declared and refresh men ca were handed round, and some good songs auug. In response to the toast of ''The Grand Lodge Odioera," Bro. G. Baily, G.D.P., replied, stating that the Order wua progressing both fiuaucially and numerically, tnauy young men joining their ranks. The Secretary stated subscription lista issued were meeting with a very good response, and thai a concert in aid of a iate brother's widow was likely to be a gro&t success.
The Industrial Exhibition- The Executive Committee, at thoir meeting yesterday, took a new departure iv the direotiou of deciding that tlie Exhibition shall be opeu daily from 11 a.m to 5 p.m., end 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. It has also been decided to write to the Minister for Linda, asking him to allow the Government dairy expert to hold classes iv connection with the Exhibition. The children taking part in the music for the opening ceremony on the 29th iust., had a very satisfactory first rehearsal yesterday afternoon at tho Caledonian Society's rooms, under Mr Geo. Daltry. The National Anthem and "Zealaadifc" were practised, " and there was a very excellent volume of voice. The second rehearsal takes place on Thursday next at 450 p. in., at tho samo place.
National Association.— A meeting of the Council of the National Association (Canterbury section) was held at MorWn's buildings ou Wednesday eveuing, the President (Mr Geo. Kwanii) in the chair. A number of new members wire elected. A letter from the Secretary of ihe Brockloy Co-operative Coal Mining Company, Limited, asking the support of the Association in getting the Government to construct a line of railway from Glentunuel to a point near the coal tips, a distance of 5& miles, wu read. After a full discussion, it was reBolved—»That>, in view of the- fact tlmfc the Government had refused, on account of the cxpeuse, to proceed in the mutter, this Association cannot see how it can afford any assistance. Other business of an important character was transacted and the meeting adjourned until Wednesday next.

The receipts were £104 Oi 9.1, the dr. balance ac the Bank of New Zo.Uan'l was £53 6s. Accounts amounting to £69 4s 4d wore passed for payment. The Finance Committee's report was read, suggesting that £600 should be paid off the loan of £1500, and a fresh loau of J6900 be procured. Agreed to, the Works Com* rnittee recommending asphalting and other works. Mr G. Armstrong's offer re fencing was accepted.
School Committees—The monthly?maet* iouj of the RaDgiora Committee was held on Wednesday evouing, Mr R. Ball presidine* The Master's report was read, and Mt interim report of Dr. Anderson's examination of the school was laid before tin Committee, showing that apparently the results were satisfactory. It wa9 decided to celebrate Arbor Day by planting come trees and shrubn on the south side of the ecliool ground. Accounts were passed, and the Rev. P. R. Monro and Mr Luxton were appointed a Visiting Committee, The Committee P* 8 ' 4 ™ a resolution of regret at the death of Mc J. V. Colborne-Veel.—Aspepial meeting of the West Christchurch Committee was hem on Wednesday evening. Present —Mr W. McClca i(cliairman), Messrs J. Js'iiater, F. W. Sandtord, G. Tombs, H. C. Godfrey, H. Ciulett, G. Watson arid G T. Chisnall. As the school around was too wet for planting, it was decided not to give the school a holiday on Arbor Day, August 7th, but to defer consideration of the matter until the next ordinary meeting. . ;

Mr Ryan Lad to respond to a. triple encore for his topical reejtation, * ed "f ve ff other items in the programme, notably^" , F.dgar's comic soogs, were also re-demanded. Master Loader danced a sailor's bornpipe well, and for an encore g*ve a song, which was londly applauded. Mrßoasiter's orchestra played a couple ot. selections in good atyle. The programme concluded with the comedy ■" My--Turn Next," in which th*: characters were filled very crei|itaiily by members"of the Hibernian Amateur Dramatic Club. Mrs K'gW ao enmpariied the various items with much skill and artistic ability.
