FASHIONABLE MARRIAGE. The Duke of Argyll was married to Miss McNeill to-day. NEW ZEALAND TRUST AND LOAN COMPANY. At a meeting of the New Zealand Trust and Loan Company Mr Lionel Fletcher, Chairman, said the Company had had to use £80,000 of the reserve fund to cover the depreciation owing to the fall in values. Replying to a shareholder he said it was not expected that the New Zealand Government scheme of lending money to settlers would interfere with the Company at present. THE FRENCH ELECTIONS. Paris, July 30. The Socialists and Radicals have suffered a great defeat in the French departmental elections. Only twelve Socialists have been returned. THE TRIPLE ALLIANCE. Rome, July 30. Signor Crispi states that peace is preserved chiefly through the agency of the Triple Alliance. He feared that Africa would yield the first spark that would kindle a European war. Italy possessed the Erythea and Tigre country on the Red Sea littoral, and intended to remain there at all hazards. THE MACEDONIAN INSURRECTION. Sofia, July 31. The Turks have recaptured Menlik, which was taken by the Macedonians, and are gradually repressing the insurgents. . . •" MURDER OF WOMEN. Washington, July 30. A series of crimes similar to those perpetrated by Deeming have been discovered in Chicago, where a man named Holmes was connected with the disappearance of no less than thirteen women. Three bodies were found buried in quicklime in a cellar. Holmes has disappeared.
