THE LATE MR VEEL.
"The North Canterbury Education Board met at 11 o.m. yesterday. Preseut—Meesrs R. Westenra (Chairman), J. Rennie, J. Mannings, J. W. Sawle, T. \V. Adams, and H. W. Pervman.
The Chairman said—lt is my painful duty to-day to have to acquaint the Board of the death of our Secretary and old friend Mr Veel. I propose, as a mark of respect to him, that, after taking one or two matters of importance which must be attended to, the Board should adjourn tor a week. I will say nothing more at present, but on a future occasion shall refer to the sad loss we have sustained. He (the Chairman) then stated that it would be necessary to appoint some oue to frank letters and sign cheques. The Buildings Committee had appointed Mr Lane to do the former, subject to ratification by the Board.
On the motion of Messrs Mcxsikgs and Resxie Mr Lane was formally appointed to frank letters for the time being. Mr Pcbtman said that, under the Act, cheques had to be signed by a member or members of the Board and the Treasurer. Owing to the sad death of their Treasurer it would be necessary to appoint some one, aud he moved that Mr Aliard be appointed Treasurer for the time being with authority to sign cheques.
Mr MuxNrxGS seconded the motion, which was carried.
The Chaih:jas moved the adjournment of the Beard until eleven o'clocli next Wednesday, and announced that the f aneral of the late Mc Veel would take place at 2 p.m. to-day. ■ ■ ,
Mr Muxsisgs seconded the motion, which was carried, and the Board a-djoarned.
