FIRES AT PALMERSTON NORTH.
TWO MEN BURNT TO DEATH.
(press association telegram.) PALMURSTON NORTH, July 29. The Empire Hotel was burned down betweeu 1 aud 2 a.m. to-day. Most of the inmates had a narrow escape, and two men were burned to death in attempting to make their escape. One was Walker, a hawker, recently from Victoria, aged 34, and the other an old man named Maurice Conuell. The origin of the fire is unknown. A few minutes later a second fire broke out in the square, destroying the shops of Harbyi fruiterer, where it originated, and Haydon, frocer ; also offices occupied by Guy and [aggett, solicitors, and the Diainage Board engineers. Very little was saved. The bodies were recovered, but were unrecognisable. Te Aro House was saved with difficulty by the exertions of the Brigade. Following are the insurances:—£93o in tbe London and Lancashire, £550 in the Imperial, £1300 in the Commercial Union, £150 in the National, £100 in the Alliance, and £250 in the New Zealand offices.
