INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION.
The usual meeting of the Entertainment Committee was held ou Saturday evening. The Chairman, Mr G. R. Hart, presided, aud there was a good attendance. Offers of assistance in bhe matter of getting up one of bhe nightly programmes were received from Miss Vartha, bhe Estudiantina Band, the Sir H. Bishop Glee Society, and Herr Hirschburg. The offers were accepted with thanks. It was resolved—Thab bhe Secretary communicabe with bhe various musical establishments of the city asking on what terms they will supply a full grand piano for use during the moabh of bhe Exhibition remaining open. A letter was read from the Alpine Club, replying to a request for assistance in getting up entertainments. The letter stated thab the Club would be willing to hold their Annual Exhibition in connection with thab of the Industrial Association on condition of a contribution of £5 being made bo bheir funds bo enable a series of new lanbern slides to be collected and made, and also that the members and subscribers to the Club should be admitted free bo the entertainments given under bhe auspices of bhe Club. • Mr Beaven moved—" Thabib be a recommendation to the Finance Committee bo seb aside the sum ot £5, as asked for by bhe Alpine Club in their letter." Mr E. VY. Sk-Giib. seconded bhe motion, which was carried. A lengthy discussion ensued as bo tbe bime of opening bhe Exhibition on bhe 29th Augusb. Ultimately it was resolved—Thab the Executive Committee be requested to deter the consideration of the question of bhe hour of opening the Exhibition on Augusb 29th till their meeting following the one ou Monday. The question of arranging for the lighting of the proposed fountain by other means than electricity was referrred bo Messrs Scott and Ray ward, to reporb ab nexb meeting, On the motion of Mr E. W. Seageb, the following list of invited guests at the opening ceremony was adopted, subject to any necessary alterations:—The Miyor of Christchurch, the Mayors of suburban boroughs, Bishops Grimes and Julius, his Honour Mr Justice Denniston, Rev. W. Morley, R-v. Dr. Elmslie, President of bhe Canterbury Agricultural aud Pastoral Association and Sir John Hall, President of the Society of Musicians, President of bhe Art Kociety, Colonel Gordon and Major Slater, Chairman of bhe Board of Governors Canterbury College, Chairman of the Board of Education, President of bhe Chamber of Commerce, bhe Cousuls of bhe various nabions, heads of bhe various Friendly Societies, captains and officers of any of H. M. ships in Port, and also captains and officers of mail steamers, Sec. With reference bo the question of competition in children's classes it was resolved— "That bhe Secretary communicate wibh bhe Children's Work Committee, pointing out bhab the suggestion thab Competition should bake place in connection with the school children came from the deputation waiting on the Entertainment Committee from the Children's- Work Committee." A meeting of the P.inting sub-Committee was held on Saturday, when the arrangements' for the official catalogue were considered. It is intended to make the catalogue very attractive by inserting a number of process pictures of the local scenery, aud also of some of bhe mosb important of our local industry premises. It is proposed to make a small charge for the catalogues, but also to distribute a number gratuitously amongst the exhibitors, Sec .- ■ ■ *
