LORD BRASSEY.
THE FAEEWELL BANQUET. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. London, July 18. Mr Gillies, Agent-General for Victoria, presided at the farewell banquet to Lord Brassey. Sir W. B. Perceval was amongst those present. The gathering was of a most representative character. Lord Brassey, in replying to the toast of the evening, said an assemblage like the present showed the desire there was to maintain the unity of the Empire. The greatest duty of colonial Governors was to foster every kindly feeling serving to bind the silken fetters of mutual pride and affection between the Mother Country and her daughter States. As one of the most active advocates for Imperial federation, he could not reconcile it with a sense of public duty to decline the post when it was offered to him. Hβ regarded the position not as an empty sinecure, but aa an opportunity for himself and his wife to co-operate in every effort for the advancement of the community in, the social happiness and moral elevation of the people. They were going forth ready and eager for the work before them. He thanked Lord Hopetoun, the former Governor, for the counsel and advice he had given them, and he was resolved to follow in his steps. Lord Bipon said he hoped the colonies would maintain the Governors'salaries, and thus facilitate the selection of suitable men. The Daily News remarks that Lord Brassey has learned the true meaning and uses of a Governor.
