The Manchester Ship Canal Company have addressed a letter to the Agent-General for . Victoria, together with voluminous printed returns, consisting of maps, lists of due?, populations and requirements of tbe die* tricta served, showing the savings and ftd« vantages of shipping direct lo Manchester for English midland and northern, and Scotch consumption. According to these statements, it appears that the relative charges per ton from the two ports are aa under:— .
These are material savings, and similar differences are shown in favour of Manchester in regard to fruit, egga, cheese, aud poultry. We wouder why wool was nob added to the , list. The Manchester Corporation hftVt opened cold stores capable of holding 120,000 carcases of frozen mutton, besides beef and butter, and a determined effort is being made to make that city the entrepot for Lancashire, Yorkshire aud the sur* rounding manufacturing districts. The manager remarks that " Manchester possesses the largest butter market in England, and nearly the whole of the Danish coneign* menr.B of this pro luce are negotiated tbrongb the Manchester market."
