No mention is made in the Australian papers of Pit her starting in the Oue lifla Australasian Championship at the Briebane Carnival, and it is doubtful if he was a competitor. Oα June 29th A. E. Heunsell made a fruitless attempt to beat Saallcrass , record from Nelson to Foxhill and back. As vat mentioned last week, Shallcrass rode the distance in 2urs 33<nin, but Houusell took 22min longer. Shallcrass takes Mr Mercer's trophy for the rider holding the record for th« journey before July Int.
In view of testing the racing atreugth of the various clubs in ami near Sydney, the Sydney B.C. have decided to include a team race in the programme for their Championship Mediae: to be held on September 7th.
The well-known Sydney cyclist, A. E. Pearson, died at bis residence in Sydney on June 25th at the age of twenty-three yeara, after an illness of about eighteen months. He was one of the best riders ia Sydney in the days of the old ordinary machine, snd won many prizes, both on the track and road. He first joined the Rid fern Bicycle Club, and about three years ago joined the Sydney Club.
The first prize for the next Austral Wheel Race has been fixed at .£2OO.
John Ruck, of Chislehurst, and R. B. Wick, of S. Barts, successfully accom plUhed a ride across the Channel aboard a taudera cycle boat at the beginning of May. They started from Dover at 8 a.m. Sunday and reached Calais Harbour at 3.15 p.m., after traversing about fifty miles ot ocean. The tandem is exceedingly light and fast, and tbo crew were in bo way distressed when they finished.
The new cycling track was opened at Catlord Bridge on May 18th, when the Catford Cycling Club held a raeetiu«. The track measures three laps to the mile. It is banked to 7£t 2in, is26tt in width at the rounded beads and widens to 35ft in the 130 yds straight. The grand stand i« capable of holding 1000 spectators under cover, and there is plenty of dressing and bath accommodation. On the opening day there wan an attendance of over 10,000, and some good racing was witnessed. In the 440 yds Scratch Safety Race the final heat was wod by F. W. China (Moleaey C. and A.C.) in 30 4-ssec, which is 1-osec better than ihe previous English amateur record. E. E. Parlby (Surrey 8.C.) finished second, and J. H. Hardinpt (Globe C.C.) third. Chirm tied the previous record in his preliminary heat, and in the second round he rode the distance in 31« ec, knocking l-ssec off the previous best, and he then beat bis new record as above stated. A One Mile tandem match was decided between A. J. Watson and J. Plattßatts and Tf. L. Lambley and J. O»bora«, and the former pair won easily in 2mia 13310 th sec, the last quarter being ridden ia 26 2-atk etc, which i« a British record for any form of machine or class of rider. The only other scratch race wa» a Ten Miles Invitation one, for which twenty riders itarted, buc the pace was to warm when alx miles had been covered that all bat five had retired. GibbonsBrooks led from the first mile until the last lap, when hu tyre punctured and Platt-Betts p«e«ed him and won by fitly yards. Time, 23rn in loaec.
A twelve hours' race for prizes to the value of £100 was decided at Gosforth near Newcastle on May 18th, when there were sixteen starters. The record was 260 miles 175jd» by G. Hunt at Nottingham. Haut w»s amongst the starters, and he soon took the lead. Just after finishing 70 miles Hunt slipped and was thrown heavily against * post, and broke bi3 collarbone, and was taken to the Newcastle Infirmary. Hunt was leading by six laps at the time of the accident, when J. F. Kudman took command, and led for the rest of the diitance, winning by over a mile from Suckley, with Heneon six and a half miles away third. Rudman covered 211 miles 1609 yds. The weather was wet, and the race did not attract much attention.
The Five Miles Scratch Rtce for the Bristol B. and T.C. Challenge Vase, value 30g», was decided at the Bristol B. and T.C.s meeting on May 13th, and after a good race H. Brown (Leigh A.C.) iron by a yard from F. MiUarrt (No its Castle CO, with S. Burge (Pools Wheelers) third. L. Strond was amongst the other starters, and he only had to win this race to secure the vase outright, but he was blocked during the final lap.
The 100 miles record was lowered at the Velodrome Buffalo, Paris, on May 19th, by Michell, an Englishman, who rode the distance in 4brs 2rnin 45 4-sbh sec. Buret, the French champion, was second, smin 12sec behind Michell. At the Velodrome da l'Eit, the American, Banker, was beaten by Houben, the Belgian champion, by a length.
