THE MARKETS.

Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright

London, July 16. The quantity of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 3,640,000 quarters, and for the Continent 1,370,000 quarters. A cargo of Victorian wheat, ex Inveresk, has been sold at 23s Bd.

An inferior selection was offered at the London wool sales to-day, but the bidding was spirited and prices remain firm.

July 18. The wool sales are animated and the competition keen. Prices remain firm. The series closes on the 81st.

The American visible supply o: wheat is 49,140,000 bushels.

Melbourne, July 18. The Age, referring to a suggestion by the Statist, that the rise in the price of wool is likely to lead to the investment of fresh capital in station properties, says that no doubt the rise will materially strengthen the financial position of the colonies. Allowing for the drop at the third series of sales there has been an improvement in the past series of 12£ to 20 per cent, on the prices obtained at the opening sales this year, which is quite sufficient to warrant the Statist's comments.

A shipment of 358 horses, including several well-known racers and trotters, has been sent to India.

Sydney,. July 18. At "the" opening sales of new season's teas business was somewhat restricted owing to higher values compared with last year being demanded by the vendors, who had to purchase in a dearer market; 27,000 packages were cleared in Sydney and 28,000 in Melbourne. Good medium teas are in good request; low and finer grades are neglected. The average results so far will barely realise vendors' costs.
