THE AUCKLAND ELECTION.
(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.)
AUCKLAND, July 17.
Mr Fawcus appointed four delegates to confer with Mr Napier. They have been discussing, the political situation all the morning. It is expected that Mr Fawcus will resign this evening. At a meeting of the Central Council the following telegram was read from the Hon. W. Jennings and Messrs D. Pinker ton, E. M. Smith, A. Thomson, J. A. Millar, and XV. XV. Collins, M.H.R..:—" We strongly urge on the members of Central Council to agree to support Mr T. Thompson. His return to the House is desired by the Government, otherwise they will be placed in a false position. But this is through the labour organisations at Auckland, for it was the Minister for Labour when at Auckland, who publicly announced that in case of a bye-election Mr Thompson would be the Government candidate. To this no exception was taken at the time or since. Don't let dissensions creep in and thereby allow the opponents of the Government to secure a victory. The members of the Council should individually remember the great responsibility cast upon' them in this extremely urgent case. They should remember that the defeat of the Government will have a prejudicial effect not alone now, but at the general election. Therefore, we again urge unity in this matter, and ask the Council to remember that by keeping our ranks close we can win this election and ensure future victory." Mr Monk addressed his first meeting of the electors in the City Hall; the Mayor presiding. There was a crowded attendance. He received a vote of thanks and confidence.
The Progressive Liberal Association of Christchurch sent yesterday afternoon a telegram to Mr Fawcus, stating that they trusted he would fight the election to the finish, and felt confident he will succeed.
