TIMARU HARBOUR BOARD.

At a meeting of the Timaru Harbour Board yesterday, the Secretary submitted the returns of rateable values in the subdivisions of the harbour district. A resolution was passed allocating the total demand for £6000 as follows : — Timaru Borough, £599 6s; Levels County, £1325 12s 6d ; Geraldine County, £1753 3i 5d ; Waimate County, £1517 8s 8d ; Mackenzie County, £804 9s sd. The Foreman reported that, owing principally to the late bad weather, tha uhingle had gone out during the late rough weather about 120 ft at the toe and is now 120 ft beyond the end of the wharf, or the commencement of the curve. A very few more days of rough weather would carry it past the curve. Tho Secretary submitted a statement showing that the trade for the half-year ended June was 2600 tons more than for the same period last year. The wool shipped was 24,800 bales, compared with 20,000. Mr Bullock said 3000 bales came from Oamaru, and Mr Jonas said he brought 1500 from Ashburton. The most important business of the day was a consultation with the Engineer, Mr Maxwell, on the question of extending the breakwater. The question discussed was whether the breakwater should be extended in rubble or in concrete. Mr Max well preferred rubble, and said 500 ft could be done more cheaply in rubble, bis estimate being £33,000, while concrete might cost £40,000. Bub it would not be worth while doing anything less than 500 ft in rubble, owing to the initial cost. The Board have not'£33,ooo, and could not get it under (a year,' and perhaps not at all. The Board has funds in hand to do perhaps 200 ft in concrete, and could start at once. In these circumstances Mr Maxwell was in favour of making the extension in concrete as far as the Board's meaus will allow. This view was adopted. Ib was resolved that Mr Parr should prepare pla _s for 500fb in concrete, for submission to the Royal Commission.
