INDUSTRIAL ASSOCIATION

A meeting of the Building and Lighting Committee in conucct.oa with the Industrial Exhibition was held yesterday afternoon. Mr R. W. England presided, and there was a large attendance. The Cuairuan said that the timber and iron necesaary for the erection of the annexe as provided for in the plaus submitted and approved by the Executive, had been purchased by ths Sub-Committee. It was intended to carry out the work by day labour, with a foreman of works. The Sub-Committee had appointed the foreman and also fixed the rate of pay at 93 per day for workmen and 10s per day for the foreman. It was expected that a start would be made with the building ou Monday should the weather prove favourable. The plans as approved had beeu submitted to the City Surveyor and passed by him. The action of the Sub-Committee was endorsed. The Committee then proceeded to consider the questiou of lighting the Exhibition. Mr R. C. Bishop, Secretary of the Christchurch Gas Company, attended at the request of the Committee, and submitted a draft plan of the proposed lighting of tho Driilshed and avenu s, the concert hall, and avenues in the new building, and also tho outside lighting. The plan proposed that tbe concert hall should be lighted by six regenerative lignta, which would give a meat brilliant light. On the sage ttiere would be one row of border lights and footlights. The avenues, which are 10ft wide, would be lighted by fifty-two T burners, each being 14ft apart. The refreshment room would also be well lighted. There would be fifty-six lights in tbe Drillshed, disposed similarly to those in the other avenues. There would be twenty lights in the gun shed, where the workeiM would be, which would give them plenty of light. Anyone requiring lights in their bays could arrange with the Executive for the • same . at a cost for the fitting-!, and also for the quantity of gas used. At the entrance gate there would be a large lamp and an ornamental crown device, whilst in the money box and the entrance approaching it there would be plenty ot light. Until the completion of the fiual plana showing how much of the Drillslied. ground would be occupied, tho outer lighting could not be decided. The coat of gas for the 128 lights proposed would be about 7a 6d per hour. The estimated cost of putting in the gas and carrying on tho lighting of the exhibition for *ay 28 nights, was £52 7s 6d, including the cost of gas consumed. The propositions and the draft plan as submitted by Mr Bishop were discussed at some length by the Committee, Mr Bishop answering a number of questions. Mr Bishop having retired, Mr Noble had an interview with the Committee with reference to the provision of electric arc lights. The cost of three arc lights, viz., two for lighting and one for the electric fountain, was estimated by Mr Noble at £30, which, with the £10 estimated cost of construction, made a total of £40. Mr Noble having answeied several questions by members of the Committee retired^ The question of the two courses laid before the Committee was considered at some length, and it was resolved—" That the draft plan proposed by Mr Bishop for the lighting of the exhibition be approved, and that the Chairman be authorised to enter into arrangements with the Christchurch Gas'Compauy for the carrying into effect of the same." It was agreed to consider the question of still further extending' the building at a future meeting; Mr Triggs, the Chairman of the Space Committee, being requested to bring up a statement of the total amount of space applied for. The meeting then adjourned.
