BANCO BUSINESS.

Before commencing the Chamber businett yesterday his Honour Mr Justice Denniaton made the following remarks regarding a paragraph in Friday's Lyttelton Timet:— " Before beginning Chamber business I desire to refer to a paragraph in this morning's issue of one of the papers. As I have said before this, I never notice any paragraph or letter merely on account of its reference to myself. Bat when I am inaccurately reported aa making statements which would, hart the feelings or injure the reputation ot others, I think it my duty to make the correction. The statements ia question are altogether inaccurate. So far from there being six cases set down and only one ready for adjudication, three of _ the cases had ou the previous day been adjourned by mc to a future date. Of the other three, which I had intimated would stand in the list, in all,, of them counsel had been instructed in case I insisted on going on. I, however, after hearing one in which no adjournment was asked for, adjourned the other, stating that my observations of the day before were not intended to inconvenience counsel by loading to a sudden change of practice, but simply as a caution. In reply to a halfjocular remark from one of the counsel, I quoted a remark made by ,Mr Justice Williams in the Court of Appeal, that he had no doubt in cases of emergency tflflf* was a sufficient supply of younger members of the Bar to fall back on. Tbi* *M literally all. I made no reference to.aome of the older members of the Bar endeavouring to absorb all the business, no reference to injury to their clients, and no reference to the inconvenience to the Court. I had said all I desired to say on that point the day before. The fact is, there were no reporters present, and I have no doubt that the newspaper has been misled by the statements of some person who has totally misapprehended what I did say. I think this statement is due to those members of tbe Bar on whom the statements, as reported, would seem to reflect."
