His Worship the Mayor has received a letter from the Canterbury Engineers' JBand offering to play musical selections at the proposed concert, to be held under the auspices of the City Council, in aid of the unemployed ; also propoaiug to bold a sacred concert on Suuday, June 30th, in aid of the Winter Work Fuud.

It is intended that the exhibition by the Palette (Jiub of sketches, &c, in aid of the Winter Work Fund shall be opened in the Id all of the Chamber of Commerce ou Wednesday by his Worship tho Mayor. In addition to the sketches, &c, exnibited by local artiats it it expected that tue Wellington Art Club will also send some. As the object for which the exhibition is given is oue which must commend itself io all no doubt there will De a large attendance of the public while it remains open. The Works Committee of the Sydenham Borough Council held a long sitting ou Thursday night to arrauge work for the unemployed. It was fouud that the two principal works proposed could not be put in haud for some days on account of arrangements uot being completed. The Committee was also hampered through not knowing the amount at its disposal and by a disposition having been shown by some members of the Relief Committee bo repudiate the arrangements for subsidising local bodies made when the fund was started. Wiihouu this subsidy the works proposed could not be carried out. The Committee hopes to be able to start a gang of men on Monday or Tuesday next, and in the meantime has referred the most necessitous cases to the Relief Fund Committee. The number of unemployed who have registered at the Council offices is 106, of whom 80 are married men.

A meeting of ratepayers of the borough of Woolatou was he.a in the Public Library last evening, to consider the question ot supplementing the funds being raised for the benefit of the unemployed and of striking a charitable aid rate. There was a fair attendance, aud the Mayor (Mr J. Richardson) presided. A letter was read from Mr John Connal enclosing a cheque for £2 2* towards the winter work fund. It was stated that, there were eloveu men oui- of work iv the borough. After some discussion it was unanimously resolved, on the motion of Cr. Hopkins, seconded by Cr. Bowron—" That the thanks of this meeting be given to Mr Counal for his donation, that a subscription list be opened for the purpose of obtaining money to assist the unemployed, and that the Couucil be recommended to at ouce vote a sum of money of from £25 to £50 for unemployed purposes." A subscription list was opened in the room, when a number of donations were promised. It was resolved that the meeting be adjourned till Monday week, in tbe meantime the Council to meet and formu late proposals to lay before the adjourned meeting. It was arranged that tenders be called at once for a supply of rubble, so as to enable the Council to employ some men as early as possible. The meeting termiuated with a hearty vote of thanks to the Mayor. An informal meeting of the Council was held after the public meeting, when it was resolved that the sum of £25 be paid at once to the Charitable Aid Board, aud to call for tenders for the supply oi 500 yards of rubble. It was decided that the rate of wages should be the same as those fixed by the Central Committee.
