JAPANESE PEACE DEMONSTRATION.
The Japanese residents at Thursday Island held a peace commemoration on May 25th. It began ab seven o'clock in the morning, and photographs for presentation to the Mikado were taken. A procession of over 200 Japanese paraded the town, headed by a basd, throwing rice and cake and distributing fruit. Daring the after* noon the demoaatratora called ay the QaecU
Chnrcb, where prayera were offered by the Rev. Mr Woods. The Japanese next visitsd the Government resident, who addressed them, and then called on the principal residents. The Japanese gave three cheers for Queeu Victoria ; and the Government Resident called for cheers for the Mikado. The demonstration included representations of the conference of the delegates of Japan and China making the terms of peace, and the shooting of Li Hung Chang, Viceroy of Pechili. The Japanese were lavish in the distribution of food and refreshments, and nearly all the residents of the island partook of their hospitality.
