WELLINGTON
Wellington, June 11. The Melrose-Foneke match resulted in a draw after a good game by each. The former had the best of the play. C. Campbell and Lusk got tries for Melrose and Poneke respectively. In the second spell Loughton touched down for Melrose, and it certainly looked like a try, but the referee, MrM'JEOnzie, ruled otherwise. The Athletics beat Wellington easily by 10 points to 3. Roache scored for the losers, and W. Hales, Snindley (a penalty goal), and Crawfurd (potted goal) for the winners. For the Junior Shield Wellington College beat Melrose by 12 to 3; St. Patrick's College beat Wellington. Second by 11 points to 5; Athletic beat Selwyh by 8 to nil. The team picked to meet Hawke's Bay is as follows :—Full back, J. Bourke; threequarters, Roberts, Lusk, Galloway; fiveeighths, Bennett; half-back, Crawfurd; forwards, M'Kenzie, Kelly, Swindley, Loughton, M'Annally, White, Pringle, A. Campbell and Shore. The latter takes F. Young's place, who cannot get leave. The team leaves on Friday by the Manapouri and plays on Saturday afternoon, leaving Napier per Australia on Saturday evening after the match. The team is weak in forwards, but the backs are fairly good, and I thiuk they will win their match. A meeting of the Union was held last night. Three Wednesday clubs were admitted to the Union, viz., Tradesmen, Drapers and Pirates. They have one delegate on the managing committee. The subscriptions to clubs joining the Union will now be—Senior, Sgs; junior, -igs; Wednesday afternoon, 2gs. The warehouses are to be closed on the 26th inst. for the Wholesale v. Retail match. Of the representative team five are Poneke men, Petone fonr, Melrose four, Athletic two. The Wellington Club has no rep. In the team.
