Joker, the grey jumping horse, is nowbeing trained by M. Ilobbs at A-sbburton. There are only two previous winners, St. Hippo and Impulse, entered for the N.Z. Cup. Loyalty and Launceaton have been leased by Mr D. O'Brien. Both horses go to the ■tud. It is expeited that Mr S. H. Gollan will ride Norton in the Steeplechase at Auckland. The Artist has been placed by his owner, Mr S. If. Baker, iv W. Holmet' hands to train. The Auckland It.C. have endorsed the action of the Hawke'a Bay J.C. re jockeys' license*. Ladybird has baen scratched for the North New Zealand Grand National Hurdle Ilace. Mr A. Lyon, the Master of the Christchurch Hounds, is expected back from England in a few days. There are only seven of those entered 2or tho New Zealand Cap that have nob already fp.ced n starter. Waver ley, who wai hurt when running in a Hurdle Rtce at Pacea, has so far recovered that he can walk. Purr it'll, whose last appearance was in the Egmont Steeplechase the other day, has been sold for a pound a leg ! Golly, and intends, so it in said, sending him across to Sydney. Last year's New Zealand Cup winner, Impulse, has been taken up with a view of repeating the victory next November. The three placed horses, Impulse, Lottie, and Aldershot, in last year's N.Z. Cup, are again entered for this year's big handicap. A more couvenient totalisator bouse on the Wangauui J.C.s course, it is said, would be greatly appreciated by speculators. Lalng, who rode Nanakia in the last Grand National at Riccarton, rode Csala to victory in the Hurdle Race at Warewick Farm. Sheenan, having abandoned the intention of riding in jumping races, is on the look out for a horseman to school his horses. Uranus, the Auckland Summer Steeplechase winner, recently formed a meal for £he wild animals at the Sydney Zoological Gardens. In naming a couple of his youngsters entered for the N.Z. Oup, Mr W. Douglas has employed part of the names of the sire and dam of each. Mr K. R. Armstrong will present a saddle to the winner of the Hunter's Flat Handicap at the Wairarapa Hunt Club's Steeplechase Meeting. It Is probable that Sir Visto assisted G. Chaloncr to win hie first Derby. Ho was to have ridden Lord Rosebery'a colt in the Two Thousand Guineas. Of the seventeen that started for the N.Z. Cup last year, Olanranald, Rosefeldt, Rangipani, Three Star, and Leontiae are absent from this year's nominations. The amount put through the totalisator at the Waneanui Sesplechaae Mooting was nearly £1000 more than was invested at last eeason'H corresponding fixture. The training quarters of the entrants for the New Zealand Cup are well distributed all over the colony, Hastings lending forth the strongest contingent. The Gisborno Park Steeplechase Club's Annual Meeting , takes place on July 11th. The events to be nominated for on the 22nd Inst, are set out in our business pages. Mr M. Livingston is talking of taking his recent purchase, Miriiio, to Australia, and the name of the cole will in all probability be found entered for a few of the events at the A. J.C. Spring Meeting. The Auckland R.C. made ltzs. by charging seven owners 2j;i. each for removing the disqualification from their ponies. These animals will not compete in the Auckland Metropolitan Club's pony events. Another small gatheri >g on tho West Coast was recently held at Taipo. Oiira won the Cup, with Wetsail second, the latter winning the Farmers' Handicap and another race. The Settlement Plate was taken by Chantilly. The advice of a leading solicitor of Dunedin was taken by a number of backers of Barmby iv the Consolation at the recent D.J.C. meeting as to whether they have a case against the Club. It was decided to take no further action. A hack race meeting was held at Arahura {West Coast, South Island) on Hay 20th, at which tho ex-Canterbury gelding, Johnny Martin, won the Farmers' Handicap; the Maori Pah Handicap was taken by Dan. Tint won the Saddle Handicap, In which Tyrant fell and gave the jockey Berdiner a severe shaking.
The Taranaki Jockey Club are agitating again to pay out on the placed horses in the totalisator. One of the members stated at the annual meeting that the system was successful in Australia. It should be mentioned that the only totalieators that pay oufc on the placed horses in Amtralla are those worked by bookmakers in shops.
