The buvstons' Revieir points out that within fourteen months prospectuses have heen issued of seventy-five mines in Western Australia. The total capital of sixty-four of them exceeds eight millions. Many of them are without any prospect of payment, and three failures have already been recorded. It is not a hopeful start. NEW CARDINALS. The Dailij Chronicle's Roman correspondent reports that the Papal Nuncios at Paris, Lisbon and Vienna are to be created Cardinals. OBITUARY. The death is announced of the Sultan of Johore at Bailey's Hotel, Gloucester road, S.W. ACCIDENT TO THE TONGARIRO. The Tongariro, which left Plymouth on June Ist, has put back to that port with her machinery disabled. She is likely to be detained about ten days. MASONIC. The Grand Masonic Lodge of England elected two nominees of the Cambudian Lodge of Sydney to the Colonial Board, and adjourned to December the debate on the proposed abolition of the Board, pending an expression of colonial opinion. FRANCE AND MADAGASCAR. Paris, June 5. News from Madagascar states that the Malagasy have successfully repulsed the French advance on the capital. A CAPTAIN EXECUTED. Madrid, June 5. Captain Clavijo, who wounded the Governor of Madrid, was shot to-day. PURCHASE OF RIFLES. Vienna, June 5. The Reichsrath has increased the vote for purchasing repeating rifles from nine to twenty-nine million florins. THE TROUBLE IN JEDDAH. Cairo, June 5. The European residents in Jeddah, fearing that the Bedouins will attack tho town, are seeking refuge on the vessels in the harbour. The trouble arose over quarantine measures against the Pilgrims. GREAT BRITAIN AND AFRICA. Capetown, June 5. Sir H. Robinson, replying to a toast at a banquet given to welcome him back to the Cape, said that he would try to reconcile African hopes with Imperial interests. It was an obligation both of honour and duty to maintain Great Britain as the paramount power in the southern part of the continent. WOMAN FRANCHISE. Ottawa, June 6. The Canadian House of Commons, by a majority of 58, rejected a proposal to confer the franchise on women. FOREST FIRES EXTINGUISHED. Washington, June 5. Rain extinguished the forest fires in the oilfields district in North Pennsylvania.
