SOUTH CANTERBURY BOARD OF EDUCATION.

At the South Canterbury Board of Education yesterday it was agreed, on the motion of tne Rev. Barclay—" That ail teachers be requested to intimate that tor the future, under the head of ' History,' a_ prescribed for senior scholarship cau_iciate», questions will be put on the * Elements of social economy,' aa prescribed under Standard VI. as defined by the Government regulations." A question of importance to Tirnaru schools Avas discussed. The question was if such a number of children were drafted from the main school to the side school as to reduce the staff requiremont(according to the regu : ations) of the maifl school, yet not sufficient to increase tbfl staff requirements of the aide school, would the Board disregard the regulations in order to save the present teachers and the present salaries ? In the discussion it was said that it had been worked out that if forty children left the main school for the side school, one or two teachers would have to be taken from the mam school, and yet that addition to the attendance at the side school would not entitle this school to any increase ou the present staff. The Board resolved—" That the Timaru School ft*)' mittee be informed that in the event of * number of pupils at present attending the main school being drafted to the side school the circumstance will not» present militate in the direction of reducing their present staff of teachers.'' Appoint' ments were approved as follows :—Mim •*• Fraser. Scottburn ; VV. Brown and Mv» »• Hopkins, Springbrook (Pareorasettlement); Mr R Stewart, Kingsdown: Mr W. Y-t**i Ashwick Flat; Miss A. Fitield. Orari Gorge. The recommendation of Mr Salmond as third teacher at Temuka waa objected to, and Itwas resolved to ask the Committee to reconsider the recommendation. Lack of experience waa the ground of objection. Mr Howell was appointed t- represent this Board on the Waimate High School Board in place of the late Mr Gold-tnith. The traffic manager of the New Zealand railways wrote that Mr Wake's (head-ias** 1 " of the Timaru main school) Saturday cla-se« would be recognised. It was resolved —" That a circular letter be addressed to all School Committees, intimating that the Board cannot allow tbeir schoolrooms to be used for dancing classes, where such are held apart from occasional concerts or eutertaiumen.. which are gi veo for the purpose of augmenting the scnool funds." , A special report was made upon the Roman Catholic schools. Mr Gow, the Inspector, said he had not made an ordinary inspection, but had visited the schoois to introduce himself, ascertain their mode or working, aud answer any questions as his methods of examination. The schools and their roll numbers are Timaru Boys 174, Timaru Girls 176, Waun*** 150, Temuka 156, Kerrytowu 106.
