'* Weekly Press." May 15. Last Tuesday Mr 3 Gothard, wife cf Mr Gothard, butcher, passed away after a protracted illness. The deceased lady was born in County Clare, Ireland, sixty years ago, came out to Victoria at the time _t fhe first gold excitement, and, having married there, accompanied her husband to Dunedin. Thence they removed to this district, carrying on business for a time in Charleston and Addison's, and finally settling in Westport, where they have resided for many years and have brought up a numerous family. Ote son is editor and part proprietor of the Wcslpori Times, another a solicitor in Woodville, a third is a partner in tbe Grm of Martin and Gothard, ironmongers here, and a daughter is in business for herself as a dressmaker and milliner. The deceased lady was widely respected for her many excellent qualities both as a mother and £3 a friend. General sympathy is felt for he- bereaved husband and family and for her aged mother, who is still living at Kyneton, Victoria.

There has been rather a dearth of social entertainments lately, but now that the winter evenings have come, they will be more frequent. Two have been hold during the past week. On Thursday evening tbe League of the Cross Temperance Society had a successful gathering ia the Pdnc£B3 Theatre, and on Tuesday evening, in Hughes' Hall, the United Methodist EYee Church gave a farewell entertainment to Mr and Mrs Metcalfe, who are leavlnc tho district.

The arrangement between the Mokihinui Coal Company aad the Knights of Labour on the royalty system is working very satisfactorily. Trial borings, made in various parts of the mine, have revealed tha existence of large quantities of hard coal, and all parties concerned ara very hopeful with regard to the success of the concern.
