BOARD OF GOVERNORS.
Au ordinary meeting of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College was held at 3 p.m. yesterday, wheu there were present— Mr H. R. Webb (chairman), Right Rev. the Bishop of Chriatchurch, Revs. Canon Harper and G. Webster, Hons. W. C. Walker, E. C. J. Stevens and W. Montgomery, Capt. Garsia, and Messrs R. Westenra, J. J. Kinsey, T. S. Weston, W. Chrystall, K. W. Fereday, J. Anderson, jun., J. V. Colborne Veel, F. D. S. Neave and G. G. Stead. An apology waa received for the absence of Mr R. Beetham. The Chairman read a letter from the Curator of the Museum, stating that the Museum had been entered on the night of Tuesday last, and gold specimens, diamonds, &c, had been taken from the gold caee in the ethnological room. The matter, the Chairman stated, was in the hands of the police. The report of the Library Committee, which is published elsewhere, was adopted. The Special Committee of Inquiry as to the agreements with and the salaries and fees of the Professors and Lecturers on the staff of the College recommended the Board— " That increased powers be granted to the Committee, and authority to investigate and report upon the ' College account,' aad upon any other accounts connected with it; and that the direction of the Board be obtained as to the pedicy of retaining or abolishing the system of the payment of the salaries of the Professors and Lecturers by means of fees paid by students." The report was considered in Committee. On resuming, it was reported that the report had been adopted, and the following resolution carried: —" That it be an instruction to the Committee that the Board approves of the principle of the payment of fixed nalaries without fees." The Board then adjourned.
