The Times, referring to the Chambers of Commerce deputation, urges the Premier to assist a Pacific steam service and cable.
Messrs Huddart, too, urge an Imperial expenditure of £ 100,000 per annum on the Pacific steamers and cable, which would be amply repaid by the improved communication, strengthen the attachment of the colonies, and develop British influence in the Pacific. Lord Bosebery informed the Chamber of Commerce deputation that he hoped shortly to be in a position to announce a satisfactory decision upon the Pacific questions. May 26. Lord Rosebery announced that the Committee has concluded the consideration of Lord Jersey's report with reference to the Canadian Conference. The Premier stated he was glad that the proposals for the Pacific cable and a subsidy to the steamers had originated in the colonies instead of Great Britain.
